(my take on the classic in poetic form for little girls everywhere)
follow the yellow brick road
all the way to that emerald city
glistening in the sunshine
you need the help of the wizard
to forgive you and send you home
you accidently killed a witch
and all you could save were her shoes
you will stumble on the way
as you attempt the long journey ahead
tripping over the stones in your path
along the road you will find three broken strangers
the scarecrow with no brain
the man made of tin with no heart
and the beast who cowers in fear
you will travel together
with determination and hope
to reach the man who can save you
holding on to each other
and rising up against the barriers
even as your legs grow weak
and the poppies lull you to sleep
when you finally arrive at the green city on the hill
exhausted and breathless
you will find the man is no wizard
he is only an arrogant facade
surrounded by those who bend the knee
as hope slowly trickles away
and you believe you will never be whole
sweet girl
look down at those shoes that got you here
through every obstruction you persevered
look around and see that the strangers are gone
the missing brain, heart, and courage
were always right there inside of you
brilliant, loving, and fearless
you just had to find it
acknowledge it
and live it
you have always been home
